Safety in numbers?

I'm jealous! I don't see these very often at all, and they're usually bobbing far off the coast between wave trough and crest, so not easy to see.

I wonder why they've come so far in? Storms out at sea?@@doridantoo

Good morning! I don’t raise Monarchs anymore, but the last few years that I did, I always separated the caterpillars. No more than just a few when they were small, and only 1-2 in a box when they were large enough to pupate. And the ones I did keep together always hatched from eggs on the same date, so that they’d be of the same size and maturity. I agree with you that I noticed caterpillars that were not ready to pupate “bothering” the ones that were preparing to do so. Thanks for watching, and all the best to you!

Aren’t they beautiful? I’d been scanning the skies for any special arrivals and hadn’t seen anything. I turned around to head to a different area, and turned around one last time and saw these five fly in. So I sat down and watched them from the beach for about thirty minutes.

I don't know where you live, but in Illinois, my local plant nurseries do sell a few different kinds of milkweed plants. My town also has a number of prairie preserves where Common Milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) grows wild. One of them surrounds my neighborhood, and that's likely how the milkweed I've got in my yard got here. The seeds blow in on the wind.
